TL;DR

Arizona does not issue a license called a mobile welder license. If you contract to weld on buildings, structures, or other real-property improvements, you generally need an Arizona Registrar of Contractors license in the right classification, plus business tax licenses. Field repair on equipment and trailers is often outside contracting. Confirm your scope with the ROC and your city before you print cards. AWS cards are industry credentials, not a state license.

Do you need a license for a mobile welder in Arizona?

Arizona has no standalone statewide license titled mobile welder. You may still need an Arizona Registrar of Contractors license if you bid or perform construction welding on real property. Equipment and trailer repair in the field often sits outside that statute. Ordinary business tax licenses and insurance still apply either way.

That split is the whole game. People get it wrong because national videos treat every state like one story.

Arizona licenses contractors, not the act of striking an arc. Under A.R.S. 32-1101, a contractor includes a person who, for compensation, undertakes or offers to "construct, alter, repair, add to, subtract from, improve, move, wreck or demolish any building, highway, road, railroad, excavation or other structure, project, development or improvement." [1] If your mobile welder Arizona work is that kind of job, the Registrar is in the picture.

A.R.S. 32-1151 then makes unlicensed contracting unlawful. The statute says it is unlawful "to engage in the business of, submit a bid or respond to a request for qualification or a request for proposals for construction services as, act or offer to act in the capacity of or purport to have the capacity of a contractor without having the contractor's license." [3]

Repair a cracked bucket on a loader and you are usually selling personal-property repair. Weld new stairs onto a commercial building and you are in contractor territory. Same truck. Different law.

You still need entity paper, tax licenses, and insurance even when ROC does not apply. None of that is a welder card.

If you want the operations sequence after you sort the license question, use how to start a mobile welder in Arizona.

Is there a statewide welder certification in Arizona?

No. Arizona has no occupational board that certifies welders the way it licenses contractors. There is no state welding exam that unlocks a mobile ticket.

Owners still ask for proof you can pass a procedure. That proof is usually an AWS or ASME style qualification, a contractor's welding procedure, or a test on that job. Those cards come from industry bodies or from the contractor, not from the Arizona legislature.

I would not buy a stack of process certs on day one. Get the cert the first paying client names in the spec. Pipe and structural work will tell you the code. Farm repair rarely cares about your plate card.

Safety rules still apply. OSHA's general industry welding standard is 29 CFR 1910.252. [7] It is a work rule, not a license. If you have employees, you have to run the hot-work controls. If you are on a plant site, you will follow their permit even as a one-truck outfit.

When does mobile welding need an Arizona ROC contractor license?

You need an ROC license when the offer, bid, or work is contracting under A.R.S. Title 32, Chapter 10. In plain language, that is construction-type work on real property, not every spark you throw in a pasture. [1][3]

Exemptions live in A.R.S. 32-1121. They are specific categories (owners on their own property, certain employees, utilities, and other listed people). [2] Do not invent a small-job dollar cutoff because a friend in another state has one. Arizona's exemption list is not a handshake rule. Read the current text. If the job is close to the line, ask the Registrar in writing and keep the answer.

Work you sellROC license typicallyWhy it lands that way
Field repair on farm or mining equipmentUsually noPersonal property, not an improvement to real property
Trailer, truck frame, or attachment repairUsually noEquipment repair
Structural steel, stairs, rails, or building repairUsually yesAlteration or improvement of a structure [1]
Gates or fences sold as site improvementsOften yesConfirm the current classification scope [5]
Shop fab delivered with no installOften no ROCYou may still have TPT duties [11]

Mixed weeks are where people get sloppy. One construction weld inside a week of equipment calls can put that one job under the contractor statutes.

I treat anything fastened to a building as contractor work until the Registrar says otherwise. Hope is not a classification.

What ROC classification covers welding in Arizona?

The Registrar writes scopes in Arizona Administrative Code Title 4, Chapter 9. Welding is its own specialty classification, commonly listed as commercial C-38 and residential R-38. Structural steel erection is a different scope. [5]

Read the current scope text. Do not trust a 2014 Facebook summary of C-38. If you erect structural members, a welding specialty may not cover the erection. If you only weld, a steel erection license is the wrong buy.

Arizona splits residential and commercial licensing. Dual paper exists if you will bid both. Dual costs more in bond planning and exams. It is worth it only if those bids are real.

Confirm the class code, the scope sentence, and any dual option on the current AAC chapter before you sit a test. The Registrar amends rules.

If you also run other states, do not copy their classes onto an Arizona bid. Start with mobile welder license rules in California or Texas mobile welder license rules and treat each file as a separate statute.

How do you get an Arizona contractor license for welding?

You apply to the Arizona Registrar of Contractors, not to a welding society. A qualifying party has to show the experience the statute requires. A.R.S. 32-1122 requires a qualifying party to show at least four years of practical or management experience in the trade, with recent-year limits set in that section. [4]

Arizona has no mobile welder exam. The contractor path has a trade exam for the classification and a business management exam on Arizona contractor law. Confirm the current vendor, outline, and sitting fee with the Registrar. Those numbers move, so I will not print a fee that can rot in a week.

You also file a bond or cash deposit under A.R.S. 32-1152. [6] Amounts change with license type and volume. Pull the current bond table from the Registrar. Forum numbers are junk.

Residential classes can also tie you to the residential contractors' recovery fund. Budget for that assessment if you take residential work, and confirm the current charge on the Registrar's schedule.

Expect identity checks, application forms, and proof of the qualifying party's experience. Processing is not a promise. I have no honest statewide clock I can print. Ask the Registrar for the current backlog. Do not bid licensed construction work until the license number exists.

If you are not the experienced person, you need a qualifying party who is. Renting a license is how people lose the ticket and get cited. Do not do that.

What other paper do you need to run a mobile welder in Arizona?

Arizona has no single statewide general business license. You still form the company, collect tax licenses, and satisfy city rules.

Most people file an LLC with the Arizona Corporation Commission. Articles of organization are the formation document under A.R.S. 29-3201. [12] A sole prop is cheaper on day one and worse when a disk skips. I would file the LLC if you will have a truck, a helper, or any job over pocket change.

If you operate under a name that is not your personal legal name or the exact LLC name, look at a trade name filing with the Arizona Secretary of State. Confirm the current form there. I will not invent that fee.

Transaction privilege tax is the state tax license most mobile operators actually need. A.R.S. 42-5005 is the privilege license requirement. [11] The Arizona state transaction privilege tax rate is 5.6 percent under A.R.S. 42-5010, before county and city add-ons. [10] Whether welding labor is taxed as repair of tangible personal property or as contracting depends on the job. Get a CPA who files Arizona TPT. Guessing this is expensive.

Cities such as Phoenix add a Privilege License Tax account. [13] Working across three cities can mean three local accounts. Annoying. Still cheaper than an assessment.

If you hire anyone, A.R.S. 23-902 and the rest of Title 23 put you in the workers' compensation system. [9] A true lone owner with no employees is in a different spot than a two-person rig. Confirm coverage with the Industrial Commission and your agent. Do not take a helper off book.

How much does a mobile welder cost in Arizona?

There is no official Arizona price list for hiring a mobile welder, and there is no state fee labeled mobile welder license. Costs split into paper, the rig, and what customers pay you.

Paper is the small pile if you stay in equipment repair: LLC filing, TPT license, city privilege licenses, insurance deposits. Confirm every government fee on the current form. Contractor-path paper is larger because of the exam, the bond, and any recovery fund piece. [4][6]

The rig is the real money. A used engine-driven welder, leads, PPE, grinders, and a service body will dwarf the license stack. A new custom truck can run into the high tens of thousands or more, depending on the power source and any crane. Nobody has a clean public Arizona survey of rig prices. Treat internet "average truck" figures as ads.

Customer rates follow the work. The closest public labor benchmark is the Bureau of Labor Statistics wage series for welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers (SOC 51-4121). National medians in recent OEWS releases sit in the low to mid $20s per hour, and Arizona usually tracks near that band. Check the current OEWS table because the figure moves every release. [8] Your billed hour has to clear wages, truck, insurance, wire, windshield time, and tax. Price like a booth welder and you lose.

I would not finance a giant custom rig to chase farm calls. Start with one reliable machine and a clean certificate of insurance. Raise rates when the book is full.

How long does a mobile welder take in Arizona?

Equipment-repair work can be legally open on ordinary business-filing timelines. LLC and TPT filings run on the current e-file clocks, which you should confirm on those systems. I will not print a promised day count.

The ROC contractor path takes longer because experience review, exams, and the bond all have to land. Some applicants finish in a matter of weeks. Others sit on incomplete affidavits for months. Nobody honest can promise your date. Ask the Registrar for current processing notes. Do not bid licensed construction welding until the credential exists. [4]

Building the truck is usually the long pole. Lead times on engine-driven welders and service bodies swing. Run the paper and the truck in parallel.

AWS or job tests add days once you have a procedure to weld to. They are not the state license clock.

If vehicle weight pulls you into a USDOT number or a CDL, add that testing and registration time. [14][15]

A realistic first-year picture: you can take equipment-repair calls after tax licenses and insurance bind. Construction welding waits on ROC. Anyone who promises two weeks, any scope, is selling something.

What vehicle and DOT rules apply to a welding rig in Arizona?

Your welder truck becomes a commercial vehicle once weight and use cross federal and Arizona motor carrier lines. It is not automatically a CDL truck.

FMCSA says you must obtain a USDOT Number if you operate in interstate commerce with a GVWR, GCWR, or actual weight of 10,001 pounds or more, among other triggers. [14] Many welding trucks with a service body and a big welder sit near or over that line. Weigh the actual truck. Door stickers lie.

A commercial driver license is a different threshold. Federal CDL rules generally hit a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more, plus certain combinations and hazmat cases. [15] Plenty of mobile welders never need a CDL. Some crane-equipped rigs do. Read the sticker and the trailer, not a forum.

Arizona ADOT motor carrier credentials can also apply to in-state commercial vehicles. Confirm that with ADOT for your GVWR and whether you stay inside the state.

Bottles and fuel on the bed bring securement and fire rules. Mount them like you expect a trooper and a fire marshal on the same stop.

Skip the crane you will use twice a year. Weight is what pulls you into USDOT paper.

What insurance and OSHA rules apply to mobile welding in Arizona?

You need insurance a site will accept, not a minimum you found on a meme. Commercial auto on the rig is non-negotiable. General liability is what most farms and plants ask to see. Inland marine covers the welder when it is stolen off the bed. Employees trigger workers' compensation duties under Title 23. [9]

Certificate of insurance requests will eat your mornings. I keep a standard COI packet. MobileRigPath publishes a $149 one-time Truck-Build + COI Kit at /start if you want that binder assembled instead of building it from scratch. You do not need it to follow this guide.

OSHA 1910.252 covers fire prevention, cylinders, eye protection, and ventilation for general industry welding. [7] The standard says, "If the object to be welded or cut cannot readily be moved, all movable fire hazards in the vicinity shall be taken to a safe place." Host plants will add their own hot work permit. Construction sites may work under 1926 Subpart J. Follow the stricter sheet on that site.

Cheap general liability with a fat welding exclusion is a waste of money. Read the form. If hot work is excluded, you bought a napkin.

Do Phoenix, Tucson, and other cities add licenses?

Cities do not issue an occupational license named mobile welder. They do issue privilege tax licenses and local business accounts.

Phoenix requires a Privilege License Tax account for businesses subject to the city's tax. [13] Tucson and other towns run their own privilege tax systems. If you dispatch from one city and weld in another, you can owe more than one local account. Confirm nexus with each tax unit.

Fire departments can require hot work controls on certain properties. That is a job permit, not a career license.

Home-based shops run into zoning. A loud generator and grinding at 8 p.m. in a HOA lot is how you meet code enforcement. Rent a small yard if the truck will live loaded.

What paper mistakes waste money in Arizona?

Buying an ROC license you do not need is a waste if your book is all equipment repair. Skipping ROC when you bid building stairs is how you get a citation and a bad contract. [3]

Paying for five AWS processes before you have a code job is another leak. The first client who needs a 6G test will pay for that day, or they are not a real client.

Under-insuring the truck to save a little premium is how a rear-end hit closes the company.

Copying Colorado mobile welder license rules or Tennessee mobile welder license rules onto an Arizona bid is sloppy. Different statutes.

Ignoring TPT on repair labor because you are mobile is how audits start. [11]

What should you confirm with the board before you spend?

Confirm four things in writing.

One, whether your actual services fall under Title 32 contracting or sit outside it. Send the Registrar a short scope: equipment repair versus building work. Keep the reply. [1][2]

Two, the current classification scope in AAC Title 4, Chapter 9 and the current application checklist, exam vendor, and bond table. [5][6]

Three, TPT classification with the Department of Revenue or a practitioner who files Arizona returns. [11]

Four, city privilege licenses for the places you will actually park and bill. [13]

No article can freeze fees or cycle times. The Registrar, the Corporation Commission, ADOT, and the cities change forms. If a salesperson promises a fixed approval date, walk away.

If you want the operations sequence after licensing, use how to start a mobile welder in Arizona. Neighboring-state paper is different. See how to start in Colorado, how to start in California, and how to start in Texas.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a license for mobile welder in Arizona?

Arizona does not issue a license titled mobile welder. You generally need an ROC contractor license only if you contract for construction welding on real property. Field repair of equipment and trailers often does not need that license. You still need tax licenses, insurance, and any city privilege accounts that apply to your jobs.

How much does a mobile welder cost in Arizona?

There is no official state price for hiring a mobile welder and no fee named mobile welder license. Paper costs are the small stack (entity, TPT, city tax licenses, insurance). Confirm current filing amounts with each agency. The truck and welder dwarf those fees. Customer rates are not published; BLS welder wages are only a labor floor, not a shop rate.

How long does mobile welder take in Arizona?

Equipment-repair operators can open on ordinary LLC and TPT timelines, which you must confirm on the current e-file systems. An ROC contractor license takes longer because of experience review, exams, and a bond. Nobody can honestly promise your date. Truck build time is usually longer than the paper. Do not bid licensed construction work until the license exists.

Do I need an AWS certification to weld mobile in Arizona?

No. AWS cards are industry credentials, not an Arizona license. Some plants, shops, and structural jobs will require a procedure qualification. Many farm and equipment-repair calls will not. I would test to the first spec a real client names instead of buying a pile of processes before the phone rings.

Can I repair farm equipment without an ROC license?

Often yes, because field repair of equipment is usually personal-property work, not contracting to improve a building or other structure. Stay inside that lane. If you start welding stairs, rails, or structural steel on real property, the contractor statutes can apply. When a job is close to the line, ask the Registrar in writing and keep the answer.

Do I need a CDL for a welding truck in Arizona?

Only if the vehicle crosses federal CDL thresholds, most commonly a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more, or certain combination and hazmat cases. Plenty of mobile welding rigs never need a CDL. A USDOT number can still apply at 10,001 pounds in interstate commerce. Weigh the real truck and confirm credentials with FMCSA and ADOT.

Does Arizona have a statewide business license?

No single statewide general business license exists. You still form an entity with the Corporation Commission if you want an LLC, obtain a transaction privilege tax license when you make taxable sales, and pick up city privilege licenses where you have nexus. Those are tax and entity filings, not a welder occupational card.

Do I need workers' comp as a one-person mobile welder?

A true owner-operator with no employees is in a different spot than a two-person rig. Once you hire anyone, Arizona Title 23 workers' compensation rules generally apply. Confirm your facts with the Industrial Commission and an agent. Do not put a helper on cash to dodge the policy. Host sites may still demand a certificate even if the statute does not.

Is welding labor taxable in Arizona?

It can be. Arizona transaction privilege tax treatment depends on whether you are repairing tangible personal property or contracting on real property, plus city add-ons. The state rate is 5.6 percent before local rates. Do not guess the classification from a forum. Use the Department of Revenue rules or a CPA who actually files Arizona TPT.

Can I use a California contractor license in Arizona?

No. Arizona requires its own Registrar of Contractors license for work that is contracting under Title 32. A California license does not authorize Arizona construction welding. Exam waivers or experience credit, if any, are Registrar decisions on a current reciprocity or waiver list. Confirm that list with the Arizona ROC before you spend on travel.

What insurance should a mobile welder carry in Arizona?

Carry commercial auto on the rig and general liability that actually covers hot work. Add inland marine for the welder and tools. Add workers' compensation if you have employees. Read exclusions. A cheap policy that bars welding is wasted premium. Sites will ask for a certificate naming them. Keep that packet ready.

Do I need a Phoenix license if I already have an ROC license?

An ROC license does not replace Phoenix Privilege License Tax duties. ROC is contractor licensing. Phoenix PLT is a city tax account. If you have nexus in Phoenix, expect that local account even if you already hold a state contractor license. Other cities run their own privilege tax systems. Check each city you regularly bill.

What is the qualifying party on an Arizona contractor license?

The qualifying party is the person whose experience and exams support the license. A.R.S. 32-1122 requires that person to show the statutory years of practical or management experience in the trade. It can be you, or someone lawfully tied to the company. It cannot be a rented name. If that person leaves, the license has a problem.

Can I start taking construction welding jobs while the ROC application is pending?

Do not bid or perform work that requires a contractor license until the license is issued in the right classification. A.R.S. 32-1151 bars acting as a contractor without the required license. Equipment-repair calls that are outside contracting are a different question. If you are unsure which bucket a job is in, wait or get a written answer from the Registrar.
